Broward County- A Florida woman who has a mental illness had her life and the life of her newborn infant, put in danger by the extreme caulousness and reckless neglect of the Broward County authorities when she was forced to give birth alone in a jail cell for several hours.
Tammy Jackson, 34, and a mother of three who has struggled with drug addiction and homelessness, was being held for trespassing and drug possession charges and Jackson’s mother, Shirley Nixon, stated her daughter suffers from bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Tammy went into labor in the early morning hours of April 10, but instead of delivering in the hospital, she was left alone in her cell. Later that morning, a deputy reported seeing her "squatting and screaming in pain."
Women's March Florida has signed on with over fifty organizations to the Pro Choice Coalition of Broward County (PCC) open letter demanding accountability for the inhumane and unacceptable treatment by Broward County authorities of Ms. Tammy Jackson. Women's March Florida Executive Board Director Jasmen Rogers and Women's March Florida: Broward Chapter leader Nancy Metayer presented the letter to the County Commission on June 4th with other members of the coalition.
We demand #justicefortammy and ask for your support in signing on to this important letter.
